Helen starting singing jazz aged 16 whilst still at school. Talent-spotted in the course of a gap year in London, she ended up singing with Imperial College's "Big Band" for she won a "Best Jazz Trio" competition from that band to perform at the Imperial College Summer Ball.
She then won a Choral Scholarship to Magdalene College, Cambridge and whilst she was there set up another jazz trio playing at several of the College Balls (Trinity College, Downing College and Magdalene College), as well as earning herself a strong reputation in the musical world playing the lead in the Cambridge Arts Theatre production of "Babes in Arms".
After graduating from Cambridge she did some training in jazz music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
She has worked with various bands both in the UK, the rest of Europe and America, as well as writing her own material over the years, but she never lost her love for jazz.
In 2000, she went to Africa and set up a band in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, called KUDU. The band was made up of local African musicians and they were soon playing at every major event, appearing on television, she was even offered her own radio show.
On her return to the UK, Ian Shaw (an accomplished Jazz singer himself, having won BBC Best Voice of the Year in 2005), produced her last album with her band HoneyRiders which had been signed to Universal on a five-album deal. HoneyRiders' last album out on Universal was released through UCJ arm of Universal (Universal Classics and Jazz) going on to guest with her and her band at Pizza Express, Dean Street.
Helen sings regularly at the 606 Club and the Pigalle Club in London as a solo artist. As well as headlining at some of the most famous clubs around London for jazz music (Ronnie Scott's, Pizza Express Dean Street) and other music (Café de Paris, Madam Jo Jo's), she is often asked to sing at gala events, most recently the Guardian Book Awards.
She followed Jamie Cullum in winning the "Best New Comer" award at the Marlborough Jazz Festival in 2005 and will be singing there again this year.
